Mistake Proofing

This course provides a methodology focused on five main categories of mistake-proofing tactics and shows examples of these tactics from the domain of laboratory medicine. It will help laboratories design new processes, modify existing processes, minimize mistakes, and manage risks.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Follow a methodology to analyze a process and eliminate or minimize mistakes
  • Recognize categories of tactics to eliminate or minimize mistakes
  • Differentiate "knowledge in the head" from "knowledge in the world"
  • Differentiate "culture of individual excellence" from "culture of process excellence"
  • Differentiate errors from defects
  • Differentiate "error of judgment" from "error of execution"
